Where is Friendly Avenue Church of Christ?

Who are the Churches of Christ?

Just like many others out there in this world, we are in search of truth. The modern-day Churches of Christ began in what is called the Restoration Movement some time around 1800. These Restorationists have the unique distinction of being known as the first totally American Christian movement. Though not affiliated with us today, other churches that grew from this movement are the Disciples of Christ and the Christian Churches. The Churches of Christ are organized so that the local congregations, such as Friendly Avenue, are self governing and there is no authority greater than that local level. There are several colleges, and newsletters, that have acted to centralize our cooperation; but there are no denominational, church-wide headquarters.

An outsider would probably describe us as being evangelical, outreach-oriented, benevolent, and mission-minded christians. Due to the autonomy of each of our local congregations, you will find slight differences in practice, but the main tenets of Christianity are consistent. In scripture we read that Jesus is the Christ and he was slain on the cross for our sins. After dying he came back to life and ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of God, where he is now interceding on our behalf. Jesus proclaimed that he is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no man or woman comes to the Father except through him. He went on to say that baptism saves, and without baptism we’ll be lost. He also said that we are to be witnesses for him wherever we go.

Many Christian groups profess a creed that represents their belief system, but our faith, practices, and beliefs are consistent with chapter and verse of the holy scripture. We have actively chosen to make statements of faith directly from scripture. In short we have no creed, other than the Bible itself.
